Aa12 Atchisson Assault Shotgun - The AA-12, or Atchisson Assault Shotgun, is one of the most attractive shotguns to ever grace the scattergun genre. Amazingly, the AA-12 was revived in 1972! It is not a new design, but it is one that is constantly updated and improved over time. The word "assault" may ring a bell as we all know that assault rifles have automatic capabilities. Do you recognize? Same as AA-12. This fully automatic shotgun can deliver a lot of lead in a very short amount of time.
Maxwell Atchison's work mainly revolved around creating .22 caliber conversion kits for popular firearms. He famously produced a working 22 caliber conversion kit for the M16. He built and designed several other conversion kits, as well as the .22 caliber submachine gun and the 9mm submachine gun. He worked at Military Armament Corporation, aka MAC, maker of the popular MAC SMGs.

In the 70s, his efforts turned to the creation of the AA-12. Apparently he worked tirelessly on the design, but little interest from military customers stood in the way of R&D funding. His original AA-12 did not leave the prototype stage until a company called Military Police Systems bought the rights to the design.

From there we got the modern AA-12 that we all know and probably love today. Military Police Systems dropped Atchison from the name and renamed it Auto Assault 12. After 18 years and 188 modifications and improvements, the AA-12 went from a prototype to a functional fully automatic shotgun.
The AA-12 is not a small shotgun. It is a powerful combat weapon that uses an unconventional shotgun design. It is heavily polymer and uses a rifle-like layout with a pistol grip and forward magazine.
The barrel is 17.99 inches long, just a hair short of the 18 inch NFA requirement. A CQB model was produced that had a shorter and more accessible 13-inch barrel. An unloaded AA-12 weighs a whopping 10,494 pounds, and loaded weight depends on ammunition and magazine size.
The AA-12 used a double-sided top-mounted charging handle and an AR-like safety on the left side. Iron sights are the most popular sight solution, but red dots are also available to bring Auto Assault 12 into the 21st century.

This fully automatic shotgun immediately sounds like a nightmare. Recoil must be tremendous, and what if all you need is a buckshot? First, the rate of fire was only 300 rounds per minute, half the rate of fire of a Kalashnikov. Such a slow firing rate allows users to fire a single shot easily.
Twelve gauge recoil often makes the shotgun difficult to handle. Used in full auto, it would still be too much trouble to be useful, right? So no. The AA-12 famously uses a gas system that reduces recoil by 80 percent, and a recoil spring helps capture another 10 percent of recoil. The end user typically feels only about 10 percent of the recoil associated with a 12-gauge shotgun.
Full auto feeds a lot of rounds, so to feed the beast, the AA-12 is fed from an eight-round box magazine or a 20- or 32-round drum magazine. Eight-round box magazines and 20-round drums are two of the most common options we've seen in AA-12 shotguns.
The full auto-only approach also uses an open bolt. Open bolt shotguns are very rare, but open bolt systems are not. They are common for belt-fed weapons as well as submachine guns. And for a high volume shotgun, an open bolt makes a lot of difference and makes a lot of sense. Fully automatic weapons get hot - really hot - and modern shotgun ammunition uses a plastic casing. If that hull sits in a hot room, it can melt a bit and stick. A smart move is to fit the magazine nice and tight until it burns.

One of the strengths of the shotgun platform is the variety of ammunition it can use. Because of this, the AA-12 can use your normal buckshot and slug. Users can manually cycle less lethal rounds and similar lower energy ammunition. This allows the shotgun to work in a variety of roles. Along with buckshot, this thing takes trench bombing to a new level. It can scatter hundreds of .33 caliber balls in seconds and turn a room full of bad guys into mincemeat.
The folks at Military Police Systems teamed up with Action Manufacturing Company and Special Cartridge Company to create a unique FRAG-12 round. This explosive round turns the AA-12 into a fully automatic mini grenade launcher. FRAG-12 had a maximum range of 200 meters. These offer somewhat limited performance compared to standard 40mm shells, but are much smaller and can be fired directly at the target rather than penetrating it.
If you don't want your own Auto Assault 12, you're probably not American. Alas, our gun laws prohibit us from owning a genuine AA-12 without the required SOT and FFL license. Since all of these were created after the passage of the Hughes Amendment, ownership is very restricted.
But a Florida company called Soul Invictus is trying to make dreams come true. They are working on the semi-auto, civilian-legal AA-12. The process is ongoing and was thrown around a bit when another manufacturer sold the AA-12, which the ATF designated a machine gun.

Hopefully we will all have the opportunity to own an AA-12 in the near future. Until then we can hope, dream and move on. The AA-12 may have been designed before I was born, but it is one of the most modern shotgun designs of all time.

By the books the M16 was simply beefed up and chambered in 12 gauge with the ability to go full auto, it sounded like the ultimate close combat weapon and I "can't wait to grow up and buy my own one day.". Unfortunately, a few years later, Congress banned future production of machine guns for civilian sale, and that included individual servicemen and women. There weren't a whole lot of AA-12s on the open market and misinformation about the NFA (National Firearms Act) being a completely criminal weapon at the time.

Maxwell G. Atchison was born on February 17, 1930 in St. Petersburg. Louis Missouri. He will continue to serve in the US. Marine Corps as a machine gunner (0331). He would continue to serve as a weapons instructor in firing, handling and maintaining machine guns for the Corps. He served until his honorable discharge in 1952.
He would go on to work as an engineer, inventor and designer for several firearms and aerospace manufacturers with at least twenty-four patents to his name. Many of its prototypes were assembled from existing components from other weapons in the US inventory. He saw an advantage in this, so that his weapons could be made cheaply from spare parts; In other words, why "reinvent the wheel?"
