.950 Jdj Mac - Our SSK Industries 950 JDJ Rifle aka "Fat Mac" videos have been up for less than a week and are already the most popular video we've ever made. If you haven't seen it yet, this was its introduction.

This monster was developed by the cartridge's namesake and president of SSK Industries, J.D. Jones. It is a Vulcan Cannon 20x110mm cartridge shortened and then tapered to .950 caliber. It's so big that it had to get an ATF "Sporting Use Exemption" from the ATF to keep it from being classified as a destructive device. SSK produced only three rifles to fire this mammoth cartridge.

One such rifle is the 950 JDJ Fat Mac. Absolutely pushing the boundaries of handguns, this massive single-action firearm has a number of features designed to mitigate its high recoil. First, it is located in the stock, so shooters can more easily use some sort of shooting platform. Second, it is equipped with a huge muzzle that is almost the same diameter as a 2 liter soda bottle. And finally, this leviathan long gun tips the Toledos to a whopping 61 pounds! No wonder she needed a rest on the bench.

With this rare and powerful gun, it was only a matter of time before the urge to shoot became overwhelming. One beautiful autumn afternoon I was lucky enough to take Fat Mac for a private run along with the other two monsters shown in the photo above. The .700 NE was fired from a huge Searcy & Co. double rifle. (also featured in our premier firearms auction in December 2017) and the 4-barrel was fired from a beautiful Ken Owen double rifle ( similar ). To say it was a wonderful morning is an understatement. Check out our video of some of the most powerful collectible weapons in the world.

So how was it? It's not "breaking the shoulder" as one might think. Obviously, and as you can clearly see in the slow motion, these guns are literally terrifying! Their booming reports sound more like artillery than gunfire. But what about their recoil? Let's describe them one by one:

B. Searcy & Co. Double rifle with solid engraving. in .700 Nitro Express. Sold in December 2017 for $23,000.

This is definitely an electric rifle! Literally, people used smaller guns to kill elephants. Think about that for a moment. Overall, the recoil is quite manageable. No bruises, no clothing marks and no tingling or pain in the shoulder area. If you're someone who bruises easily, your mileage may vary. While it was enough to elicit your favorite expletives when shooting, for me it had no negative effects on the body after shooting. Five seconds after my body learned I could fire a .30-06. Except, of course, my ridiculous smile and the palpable excitement coursing through my veins. There's no doubt that the 17-pound rifles and generous recoil pad helped soften the energetic punch.

Here was the bad boy. Modeled after a rifle made for the Maharajah of Rew, India, this rifle was built by gunsmith Ken Owen of Memphis, Tennessee in the early 1990s. Only six of these rifles were produced, and each massive double rifle is said to have required around 1,000 man-hours to produce. A quick look gives an immediate impression: she is short, stocky, beautiful, and my God, how big are those barrels? After much preparation and adjustment and a quick goodbye to my rotator cuff, a light squeeze of the trigger unleashes an absolute thunderclap. It will throw the shooter about as far as the .700 Nitro Express, but the feel is vastly different and stronger. In fact, it was the only rifle fired that day in which the recoil did not stop after the shot. The shoulder tingled for a while.

Think about it this way. After shooting a hunting rifle or military collectible firearm, you shoot and the feeling is complete. Otherwise you will leave. Now imagine asking a good friend to pull you over and shoot where you normally place your rifle or shotgun stock. This feeling doesn't stop as soon as the shot is over, it stays. The same can be said for the 4-hole drill and his cordite drill.

We ended up with 950 JDJ. It was the heaviest shot of the day fired from the largest gun of the day. When dealing with this much power, we treated this rifle with absolute respect. After making a makeshift "sled" out of sandbags and bags filled with lead shot, we safely positioned the rifle. The bolt was removed, the cartridge was gently fed into the claws, and then both were slowly fed into the rifle. After a little twisting of the slide, everything was locked into place and we were ready for whatever this rifle had in store.

It was quite surprising when Fat Mac produced the most manageable jerk of the day. Then again, when you consider all of the recoil dampening features listed above, maybe that's not so surprising after all. Even though all the brass must be custom made and the cartridges must be hand loaded, this is a gun you want to shoot until you run out of ammo. If only Fat Mac and I had more time to test its mettle on a wide variety of unsuspecting and unusual targets.
