The original configuration of the North American Numbering Plan in 1947 divided the state of Texas into four Numbering Plan Areas (NPAs): 214, 512, 713, and 915. The Northwest section stretches from west of El Paso to the Texas Panhandle in the north. and to Fort Worth in the east, identified by area code 915, but area code 214 was assigned to the northeastern part of the state, roughly from the line west of Dallas to Waco, to the border of Arkansas and Louisiana.

Despite the growth of the Dallas metropolitan area in the second half of the 20th century, this configuration remained in place for thirty-six years. In 1990, the eastern part of tire 214 was divided with zone number 903.
The 1990 switch was intended as a long-term solution, but within five years, 214 was close to being exhausted due to the rapid growth of the Metroplex and the popularity of cell phones, faxes, and telephones. As a measure, all of the old 214 territory outside of Dallas and Dallas County was split into the 972 area code in 1995. However, within two years, both the 214 and 972 were on the brink of exhaustion. Area code 469 was introduced on July 1, 1999 in a redevelopment plan for the eastern part of the Metroplex. At the same time, the limit of 214/972 was "cleared" and 972 was replaced by an additional layer for the tire area. As a result, three area codes covering the same area with t-digit dialing were required for all calls.
Since 2000, 214 and 972 have served the eastern parts of Tarrant County (Arlington, Bedford, Euless, Grapevine, Southlake and Colleyville) closer to Dallas.
While this results in more than 23 million numbers assigned to an area of just over nine million people, according to 2018 estimates, the Dallas area will need a fourth area code by mid-2021.

Implementation of the North American Numbering Plan in 1947 divided North Texas into two numbering plan areas. The northwest section, which stretches from west of El Paso to the Texas Panhandle in the north and to Fort Worth in the east, was assigned the 915 area code. Northeast Texas, roughly from the line west of Dallas to Waco, to the Arkansas-Louisiana border, was designated area code 214.
In 1953, area code 817 was created in a slice east of 915, roughly as far as the Abilene area, forming a numbering plan area in central Texas to the Texoma border area in the north. Existing databases do not show exact boundary lines, and it is possible that the 214 sections on the western edge of Dallas were included.

After splitting 915 in 1957, to create the sixth area of the Texas Numbering Plan, NPA 806, the Texas area code remained constant for forty years. Due to the great growth of the Metroplex in the second half of the 20th century, 817 was finally reduced in size to a triple on July 25, 1997. The northern part, including Wichita Falls and Dton, received the 940 area code. part, including Waco, Temple and Kille, changed to the 254 area numbering scheme.
This was intended as a long-term solution, but within two years, 817 once again ran out of steam due to the growth of telecommunications services in the Metroplex, particularly due to the popularity of extensions. The numbering plan area was reconfigured as a complex surface plan with a different area code, 682, on October 7, 2000. Certain areas (particularly the communities of Arlington, Bedford, Euless, Greyvine, Southlake and Colleyville) in eastern Tarrant County. generally closer to Dallas, area codes 214 and 972 are covered instead of 682, as 682 covers the central suburbs of Fort Worth. In the following areas, 817 mainly serves areas along with area codes 214 and 972.
