Area Code 858 Location - Area codes 619 and 858 are the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) telephone area codes for most of San Diego County in the US state of California.
The 619 area code was created by splitting from the 714 area code in 1982 and was the first new area code in California since the addition of 707 in 1959. Its original numbering plan area was almost all of southernmost California, from San Diego to the Nevada border.
Area Code 858 Location
On March 23, 1997, most of northern San Diego County, desert areas, and geographic areas of southeastern California split into 760. On June 12, 1999, the northern half of San Diego and the inner north suburbs split into area code 858. In June 2000, the southern and split the eastern part of the county into the 935 area code, but that split was put on hold indefinitely due to popular and political opposition.

In response to projections that 619 would be exhausted in March 2019, the California Public Utilities Commission approved a relief plan that "erased" the 619/858 boundary and turned 619 and 858 into an overlay code for all of inner San Diego County. This change came into effect in June 2018; around this time, 10-digit local calls became mandatory.
At the time, the 858 was not expected to run out for at least 30 years, despite the continued explosive growth of North County.
According to the most accurate projections, San Diego won't need another area code until 2043.
